Suga-jinja Shrine Spring Grand Festival

  • Suga-jinja Shrine Spring Grand Festival
The Suga-jinja Shrine Festival has been held since the late Edo period. In it, floats from each group are pulled together with the portable shrine procession from the Suga-jinja Shrine to the Shinmeigu Shrine. It is designated part of Okazaki City's intangible folk-cultural property as the "Suga-jinja Shrine Festival floats and festival music", and festival music passed down in each group is performed on top of the floats. It is said that the purpose of this festival is for the deity of the Suga-jinja Shrine to visit the deity of the Shinmei-sha Shrine accompanied by cheerful festival music. At the Shinmeigu Shrine, festival music is dedicated in front of the deities by two groups. The sight of the floats entering the Suga-jinja Shrine is a soul-stirring one in which the floats are pulled up the slope in front of the Suga-jinja Shrine in one go, to the strains of high tempo festival music. The scene of the four floats and the Hanaguruma float being gracefully pulled against the background of the Nukata mountains is an eye-catching sight.
