【The impressiveness of a gorgeous, soul-stirring float parade】
The Koromo Festival is an annual festival of the Koromo-jinja Shrine in Toyota City, and is known to have been held in the Kanei era (1624 to 1643). The sight of floats from the eight towns of Koromo lining up at the Koromo-jinja Shrine is magnificent, and the soul-stirring float parades are famous among neighboring towns.
When the Naito family governed the Toyota City area, the floats from the eight towns of Koromo were pulled to the Koromo Castle (Shichishu Castle), and a Kabuki play (traditional Japanese play) and Kyogen play (a farce) were performed by children on a stage set up in front of the floats. Even after a thrift ordinance was issued due to a financial crisis in the feudal domain, the festival was held every other year, and was not discontinued despite restrictions being put in pace to stop it being too extravagant. Although the financial burden from repeated floods of the Yahagi River was not insignificant, the towns repaired their floats, called in famous wood carvers to do carvings, and made the curtains.
The underlying strength and energy of the townspeople who supported the castle town of Koromo to overcome such difficult times can be felt today in the festival that is held in majestic fashion along with the festival music.
