The Tahara Festival is a famous festival of the castle town of Tahara, and is said to have begun as a festival of the Kumano-jinja Shrine in the Edo period. At the festival, the three floats carrying Karakuri puppets, which are designated as the city's tangible folk-cultural property, and the portable shrines of each town parade around the area, while children and youths perform a traditional hand dance on top of the Yoyama float to delight the people.
In the evening of the final festival day, vigorous displays of hand held fireworks and cannon fireworks are held, and the skyrockets that color the night sky form the climax of the festival.
