Chochin Festival
[Shitara-Town]
Date : 6/30/2018
  • Chochin Festival
This is a Gion Festival with connections to Gozu Tenno, which is held by the Tsushima-jinja Shrine located in the Shimizu District of Shitara Town. About 200 lanterns attached to the float with strings are lit with a sacred source of fire received from the shrine. Then, the float is pulled from the venue to the shrine together while festival music is performed with whistles and drums. After a dedication of festive drumming, the "Chochin Tori" (lantern-snatching) starts. The spectators scramble to get hold of one and bring the willow tree branches and lanterns home. They are used to decorate the front door as an amulet for protection against summer illnesses.
